Innate Resilience: A somatic approach to movement and dance with Camille Djokoto
Sunday, Dec. 1st, 2019, 1pm-4pm hosted by The Dark Side Studio
Open to all levels of ability and movement backgrounds. No dance experience is required.
This workshop seeks to explore how we access our innate resilience through movement and dance practices. We will slow down from the rapid pace of our cognitive processing and learn to tune in to our sensory intelligence.
Participants will be offered a basic understanding of Somatics and its effects on nervous system regulation. This will be used as a foundation for all guided explorations.
This experiential opportunity allows us to gain insight into how we are moving through the world, drawing parallels between our movements and the relationships we hold on this earth: with ourselves, with others, and with our environments. You will be encouraged to engage internal connections that seek to honour your intuition and wisdom.
By engaging felt sensations of safety and curiosity we will create the opportunity for spontaneity and creativity, thereby building capacity for an authentic connection to our innate resilience.
For more information on how to register, go to The Dark Side studio website.

Sunday, March 17, 2019
1:00pm – 4:00pm
Artscape Youngplace (180 Shaw Street) in the Movement Studio, downstairs*
Oppressive systems can profoundly affect our unconscious body, mind, and spirit as they seek to disconnect us from our bodies and one another. Over time and across generations of surviving racism, we begin to experience chronic symptoms of un-wellness that keep us from sensing our body’s wisdom and connecting wholly to ourselves.
In this workshop you will: learn to identify stress response symptoms, be provided with tools to track and observe your internal systems of safety, and explore self-regulatory resources needed to support opportunities for inner sensations of safety and security.
We are offering this workshop as a space for Indigenous people, Black people, and people of color to reclaim their bodies through embodied liberation practices of self-care. By deepening our connection to self, we can create the foundation for collective healing and to open new pathways of support within our communities.

The Relational Dance: Embodied Movement
Mondays, January 16-February 27, 2017. 7-9:30pm
This six part workshop explores embodied movement as a relational dance. Become dynamically present by opening to the experience of relational dance in a safe, supportive and respectful environment. Only when we are fully present to the constant dance our bodies are engaged in, can we open to the dance that we do with the other. That means becoming aware and alert to sense and feel our bodies and our responsiveness to the space, the ground, the group, and the other. Through a series of experiential exercises done in groups and dyad, we will find compassionate curiosity, and explore the joy of spontaneous and organic movement.
Come as you are. No previous dance experience required.
Soulful Movement: Connecting body and mind through dance
Mondays, August 3rd-Sept. 7th, 2015, 7:10-8:40pm.
In this unique six-part series we will experience fundamental movements rooted in Raqs Sharqi. At your own pace, you will be invited to explore a deeper sense of self through an experiential process. Engaging embodied movement, touch and sensory awareness we will seek to assimilate emotions, bodies and minds into a more integrated whole. This journey of self-exploration borrows from the holistic and therapeutic practice of Gestalt Bodywork. Bodywork honours muscular resistance by approaching it with curiosity, patience, and respect. By heightening our awareness we will practice tuning in and listening to our bodies. By supporting spontaneity and organic movement we will assist in the development of authentic style, reclaiming a fuller use of self, and moving towards integrating the mind and body.
Come as you are. Together we can explore soulful movement in a safe, supportive and respectful environment.
This class is open to all levels and backgrounds. No dance experience required.
